Audio player on the font page of IMC-London

Added by maqui about 1 year ago

There have been lately quite a few great audio reports being published to the london indymedia site. Some are displayed on the newswires but then eventually disappear from the front page into the wire archive, others, like the DI radio programmes, are archived in the DI group page, but unless one knows about that page the reports get too buried into the site in my opinion. So I would love to have a permanent audio player on the front page of the site, whereby one could look at a glance to an archive of published audio files, then chose one, and play it with one of these audio players like for example the ones in last.fm or something like that. The idea is a bit to have a section like the videos one but for audio. Trying to promote audio as a media, and hopefully this would encourage users to publish more.

And by the way, I would actually call this player something like 'Indymedia London Radio' (or something similar) and I would open it to both reports (recordings of events, talks, actions and so on) as well as music. There are a few people I know that would probably get encouraged to publish mixes if they had the opportunity to have them displayed on the London IMC front page.

It would also be great to have all the audio go into some sort of podcast type thing and make it easy for people to add it to their iTunes or whatever, so it always pulls the new audio from the London site. Not sure if I'm describing this correctly, but you get what I mean, yes?

yeah, that'd be great actually, people use their ipods all the time when traveling, commuting, and so on, and it's perfect time to listen to good audio content. i'm listening to a very eloquent interview from di to wietse (sea shepperd activist) right now, and i'm finding it very interesting. the perfect type of material to be listening whilst on the move for example.

also being able to push out imc audio content into people's itunes would be a great way of creating more presence out there for indymedia london.

I understand there's some concern to the point of making an audio wire. But if there's an audio wire, it'd be a quick and accessible way for people to get audio content. Also, an RSS feed could come off of the audio wire, which would automatically update iTunes or whatever software people use for audio downloads. And an RSS feed would be super useful for the eventual/possible setup of free radio in the UK and in the meantime would be great to push out audio content from the IMCs using hyperactive to certain places (radical radio networks around the world, radical radio shows in the UK) - I think something like that would be cool.

Hey Hey

Ok, so I've been planning to do a podcast wire for some time now. Basically, a podcast is just a bunch of mp3 files with an rss feed attached. I imagine it would work in pretty much the same way as for video, but each entry on the list would have a flash player next to it so you can choose which to listen to from the list page rather than clicking through to a new page. This could lead to things like having checkboxes next to them so you could construct a playlist to listen online from an embedded player.

Ok, so there is one problem I can see on the horizon in that podcasts pretty much need to be in mp3 format, which means we'll have to seperate off or convert any ogg files in there, but this isn't a biggy.

As for a player on the front page, perhaps have it playing all recent featured content on a loop or something like that? If someone wants to listen to a specific thing they can go to the list view under site.org/audio or something like that.

The rss feed would be subscribable in itunes or whatever and I reckon this is a really good idea. I have the ability and enthusiasm to do this at some point soon if people want me to?
